a recurring problem in modern “low-level” languages1 is that they are hard to optimize. they do not reflect the hardware, they require doing complex alias analysis, and they constantly allocate and deallocate memory. 2 they looked at the structure/expressiveness tradeoff and consistently chose expressiveness.
